Second graders are learning how to read and write larger numbers. Numbers into the hundreds and thousands. Dice helps with this like most other things. There are so many uses for dice!
We used 0-9 dice and rolled three of them. The students made three digit numbers with the rolls. They wrote each number on the board.
First we started with five rounds and wrote the 3 digit numbers on the board. We had the numbers written so why not put them in order???? Another foundational skill is estimating and talking about greater than and less than. The numbers are not in counting order so the students had to figure out how to put them in order from least to greatest or greatest to least.
Once they did that they wanted to add more numbers so we upped it to ten rounds and then ordered those and then we went 15 rounds and put all of those numbers in order.
Of course, once again, this was an activity that stemmed from and original plan that I had of having them made three digit numbers and they took it several steps further. Love when that happens!!!!
